It’s Owl Good News – Fall 2016
THE ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE
‘Tis the Season
I do not always transition well to the fall season. Yes, the peak foliage weeks are beautiful and I do enjoy a good pumpkin latte, but I am often restless and melancholy, especially after Halloween. It is a mindset issue. I call it my ‘full moon funk.’ It really comes down to my unwillingness to embrace change (um, autumn in a nutshell), dread for the inevitable (cold weather), and focus on the things I find unpleasant (like raking leaves). And then I feel guilty about it. Ugh.
So, autumn is when I kick my gratitude practice up a few notches. Taking routine gratitude breaks each day, particularly in the morning and before bed, keeps me grounded and sane. This involves listing in my head or on paper, what I appreciate, value, feel fortunate to have experienced, etc., and sometimes saying it out loud. In addition to offering gratitude through prayer, I regularly meditate on the phrase “thank you” and find myself uplifted as lovely images and memories emerge in my consciousness. I literally feel my heart swell. All the nonsense dissolves. My mood shifts. I see possibilities. I want to be of service.
There is so much to be thankful for. Most of us know this, of course. But like anything else we do to maintain our mental and emotional health, gratitude is a practice that often requires our commitment. Incorporating daily, deliberate reminders of what we hold near and dear, encourages instead the mindset of “this too shall pass” as well as the comforting feeling that we, and our lives, are more than just ok, even when we are confronted with challenges or uncertainty. Our demanding, busy days necessitate it. Join me this season. Establish a gratitude practice or enhance your existing one. Email me and let me know what is on your mind. Would love to hear from you.
I want to close by taking this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude to all of you — friends, clients, colleagues, and interested subscribers. I am blessed to be doing work that I love and next month, I will be celebrating three years since launching my practice. Wow. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for reading my newsletters and for your ongoing support!
